Borrowed [30 Oct 2008|08:04pm]
But I love it. From a blog i saw earlier today:

Rosa sat so Martin could walk.
Martin walked so Obama could run.
Obama runs so our children can fly.

It has stuck with me all day. Pass it along to anyone who might enjoy it.

quick update [24 Oct 2008|07:12am]
Late September and October, in a nutshell.

My brother comes home from Iraq. Some say we favor.

Me, Scout, and m go to Gettysburg:

Game 5 of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium:

And down at San Onofre, watching the sunset:

Tonight, I go see Sweet Honey in the Rock with m, M, and J.

Life may not be easy or perfect every day...but life, my friends, is very, very good.

my little brother is home.

for the love of God, please end this war before he has to go back. i'll post a pic when i get a chance...

Fuckers. [03 Sep 2008|10:43pm]
[ mood | Angry beyond comprehension ]

Privileged jackass laughing-at-community-organizers assholes.

Warning: live blog ahead

And now, a dig on San Francisco.

Fuckers.

"Servant's heart" is not-so-code language to pander to the religious right.

I'm going to Obama's site to donate. Now. www.barackobama.com.

update Are they actually chanting "Go, Baby, Go"?

That fucker just mock-compared Obama to Moses.

And she's lying. Flat. Fucking. Lying. Can't wait to fact-check this shit.

Now she just fucking insulted the constitution.

Be afraid.

Let me hear their fucking plans. Anything.

Fucker. Just did a disability slam on Harry Reid.

So, okay, if you are a mayor of a small town, or a Vietnam Veteran, you are qualified without question?

Holy fuck she just blew a kiss to the P.O.W.

I'm wondering. Is she going to talk about herself at all?

Well, it's over. Guess not.

What she has proven is that, well, she's qualified to give a stump speech for McCain.

Ugh. Oh--nice--the babydaddy is smacking gum up on stage. classy.

Here comes the fuck-wad in chief. Wonder if he'll stare at her ass again this time.

Wow. that enthusiasm didn't last long.

The Prince and the Discourses (#1) [03 Sep 2008|06:47am]
So. Last night, my mind is racing. Chewing on politics (the hazards of living in DC, i suppose). I pull out my old, trusty, hand-me-down copy of Machiavelli. Really--it belonged to my mother when she was getting her Poli Sci Ph.D. back in the late 70's. Maybe all of this is genetic.

Now, Machiavelli, praising King Ferdinand of Spain:

...he kept the minds of [his opponents] occupied...so that thinking only of that war they did not think of making innovations, and he thus acquired...power over them without them being aware of it...

It could apply to Iraq, Afghanistan, the 'War on Terror', 'War on Drugs', blah, blah, blah, blah.

Last night, i was acutely aware of how the Palin nomination has (in ways) completely derailed the momentum and attention which Obama et. al. had accrued. I wish i could trust that by ignoring the obvious political pandering and attention-grabbing and, well, generally acting like an adult, the republican strategy--much like an unruly child--would quiet down.

i don't trust that, though. *sigh*

#2, i am sure, is coming soon :)

Hey there, Death. [27 Jun 2008|08:04am]
KISS. MY. ASS.

Another friend has died. A horrible, violent, tragic death. Two gunshots to the head and then set on fire on her bed, burned beyond recognition. Her name was Vilma. Vibrant. Full of life. I have sung with her, danced with her, laughed with her, cried with her, prayed with her, preached to her.

I've done a cut-and-paste of the Washington Post story behind the cut. I am friends with everyone in the story. Her funeral is Sunday afternoon at MCC-DC.

Enough, already. No more, okay? )

Lucky, lucky, lucky. [26 Jun 2008|06:49am]
Wow.

As I sip my coffee and look out my window, faithful pup circling the table and hinting that "yes, yes, now would be a good time to take me outside", I am profoundly aware of how lucky I am. Last night, I spoke at a detox meeting. It was great.

The things--that represent so much more--that i will get to do today:

* kiss my dog's snout a few times
* pet my cat (if she lets me...)
* go to a good job, that pays well, in my chosen field
* connect with my brother in Iraq (already done)
* spend the afternoon/early evening with my Mistress
* tuck my boy in before he goes to sleep
* go to bed in a house, bed, and space that i like

Wow.

fun with the law (#1): Mississippi [24 Jun 2008|10:17pm]
So. part of my workaday job these days involves reviewing all of the criminal sex offense laws in all the states and territories, etc. I've run across a couple of funny ones, and figured i'd share the wealth.

#1: Mississippi

ยง 97-29-43. Polygamy; teaching of

If any person shall teach another the doctrines, principles, or tenets, or any of them, of polygamy; or shall endeavor so to do; or shall induce or persuade another by words or acts, or otherwise, to embrace or adopt polygamy, or to emigrate to any other state, territory, district, or country for the purpose of embracing, adopting, or practicing polygamy, or shall endeavor so to do, he shall, on conviction, be fined not less than twenty-five dollars nor more than five hundred dollars, or be imprisoned in the county jail not less than one month nor more than six months, or both.

No, I don't know if it applies to polyamory, non-monogamy, or any other thing that, oh, i don't know, i might engage in. that $25 and month in jail has got to hurt, though. Hope they don't show Big Love in Mississippi or someone's in big trouble...

okay, last one. [22 Jun 2008|07:21pm]
I'm sitting here with the Gymnastics Olympic Trials on as i've been working on my LJ updates.

So, is it just me, or are these women's/girls male gymnastics coaches just a little pedophile/ephebophile creepy? i'm getting a very serious case of the ookies watching it.

maybe i've just been doing what i do for a living for too long.

Baseball! [22 Jun 2008|06:46pm]
Okay, two baseball games in four nights. One in Memphis, one in D.C.

Baseball is still very good to me )

So, that's all for the baseball update. I am sure that there will be more--i'm planning on going to Fenway and Yankee stadium later on this summer if i can swing it. Maybe Philly, too.

Until then, here i am at one of my happiest places anywhere:

my boy and i passed the 6-month mark on Father's day. we'd had a tough week, and kept things very low key, just spending a few hours together sunday night. i brought my boy a little Father's day present. here's the picture he sent me as he was drifting off to sleep:

My ass is sore. [05 Jun 2008|03:01pm]
[ mood | blah ]
[ music | bad disco music and milling passengers ]

No, not like that, you pervert.

I've been sitting on the floor of the Atlanta airport for an hour and a half, and i've got another hour and a half to go before my flight to Memphis takes off. There has been much Blackberry-ing and texting and surfing and drinking of water. I'm staring at the moderately-ginormous backside of a guy in his Wranglers and a safari hat...ahhh, the goodness that is Air Tran's terminal.

One last good Vermont story [29 May 2008|09:00pm]
[ mood | calm ]
[ music | bluesy jazz vocals ]

Warning: Lots of F-bombs and a kinda-sorta NSFW pic behind the cut

So. Me and the boy left Burlington on Sunday night, and didn't allow a whole lot of time to get through security. Burlington is a small airport, we just had carry-ons, and the whole thing just wasn't going to take very long, right? I mean, c'mon, I do this all the time.

I should have known our luck was about to change when I met the TSA agent checking ID's. She had the most perfect fucking mullet I've seen since 1991.

My boy's junk got him stopped by TSA )

Of course, every terrorist on the planet could probably get through security up there as long as they didn't have a fucking penis in their bag. Because, you know, that is the biggest threat to national security these days.

[ music | 89.3 Pacifica ]

So, finally, an update.

And, as an incentive to get you to go behind the cut, this is where i was on Saturday afternoon, enjoying the sunshine in Waterbury, Vermont:

Green Mountain Adventures... )

Maybe, maybe, maybe i'm learning to have fun and relax...
